It sounds like an Oscar nominee isn’t going to be a celebratory news for TOHO’s Godzilla Minus One, still making great numbers at the US box office, as film is all set to be surpassing ‘Parasite’s US run, the last biggest international grosser in the region.
Last week when Oscars 2024 nominations were announced, the monster film became the first Japanese film ever to get a VFX nod from Academy Awards voters.
The film is currently the highest-grossing international film in the US since ‘Parasite’ that released in 2019. The action thriller was the best foreign film in US in 2023 beating Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Pathaan’.
Both the color and black & white, which was released in US theatres on 26th January, versions of Godzilla Minus One will be in theaters until February 1, marking the end of their US theatrical runs.
But before that the film has already grossed $53.2M USD in the US, after an excellent jumped figure of $751k on the 9th Friday, up roughly by 327% from the previous Friday.
The film is $1 million away from ‘Parasite’s $53.3 million run in US.
The film has experienced a great boost in box office earnings, seeing a US nationwide expansion from 535 to 1,800 theaters, benefited from the Visual Effects Oscar nomination, thus anticipated to have a 9th 3-day weekend in the range of $2M-4M USD.
‘Godzilla Minus One’, after crossing the $50M gross milestone at the US box office, became the only international film post-pandemic to achieve this milestone.
