Studio Ghibli’s animated film “The Boy and the Heron” has become the 3rd highest-grossing international animation of all time at the US box office, surpassing “Pokémon: The Movie 2000” final run this weekend.
The film grossed $600k on its 8th 3-day weekend with 580 theatres, totaling $44.2M in the US Box Office.
The box office success has also been a favorite of critics and winning multiple nominations in this awards season.
‘The Boy and the Heron’ has not only received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature but has also won the Best Animated Feature Film category at the recently concluded Golden Globes 2024. The hit animation has also earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Animated Film
At the age of 83, Hayao Miyazaki, the animation icon, who previously won an Oscar for ‘Spirited Away’ in 2003, has been nominated for an Oscar for the ‘The Boy and the Heron’, his fourth nomination in the best-animated feature category, tying him with Pixar’s Pete Docter.
The film’s storyline sees a young boy named Mahito living in a world shared by the living and the dead.
The movie’s success is reflected in its domestic and international box office earnings, with a worldwide total of $162 million as per Box Office Mojo.
