It seems odd that despite the insane commercial success of the fantasy movie “Barbie”, the Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie headlined film got snubbed in the Best Film category for the upcoming 2024 Bafta awards.
The fantasy film, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu and others, received only five nominations, whereas the atomic bomb biopic from Christopher Nolan, headlined by Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer” leads with 13 nominations.
Greta Gerwig, the milestone creator female director at the global box office, did not receive a nomination in the best director category. The movie grossed an incredible over 1.44 billion US dollar edging the second top earner of 2023 ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ by a fair figure.
Margot Robbie, who played the lead role of the Barbie doll, received recognition in the Leading Actress for 2023 and will be competing against Emma Stone for “Poor Things” and Carey Mulligan for “Maestro” among others.
“Poor Things” a film about the sexual awakening of a woman brought back to life, is the second-most nominated film with 11 nominations. Martin Scorsese’s Leonardo DiCaprio-led “Killers Of The Flower Moon” and the historical drama “The Zone Of Interest” got nine nominations each joining the list of top 3 titles with most nomination at BAFTA 2024.
The Bafta nominations also include contenders such as Barry Keoghan for “Saltburn” and Bradley Cooper, who starred in and directed “Maestro,” for Leading Actor.
In the supporting actor and actress categories, nominees include Paul Mescal, Ryan Gosling, Robert De Niro, Claire Foy, Rosamund Pike, and Emily Blunt.
The Bafta ceremony, to be by hosted by David Tennant, is scheduled to take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on February 18.
It’s clear that “Barbie” did not receive the expected recognition in the Best Film category, despite its impressive box office performance in 2023. At least that is what Margot Robbie and her team were expecting.
Next it is Oscars 2024 next and we have to wait and see if the blockbuster hit at the box office sees the recognition as one of the best film of 2023 or not.
