Water Resources of Pakistan
Global water supply in oceans is 97% and the remaining 3% is freshwater. So, in freshwater 70% are glaciers, 29% aquifers and the remaining 1% is lakes, rivers and streams. In Pakistan, there are two main resources of water, surface water and groundwater. The surface water comes from five main river’s joining the Indus from the eastern side which are Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej. besides these major rivers, minor rivers are also draining into Indus. Furthermore, surface water’s total area is 154 million acre-feet (MAF) out of these 26% flow to the sea, 6% loss and 68% irrigation purposes.
of the groundwater in Pakistan, the Indus basin underlines by an unconfined aquifer covering about 15 million acres in surface area.
In Punjab, about 76% of the area and Sindh about 28% of the area is underlined by fresh groundwater which is mostly used as supplemental irrigation water and pumped through tube wells.
In KPK abstraction in excess of recharge in certain areas such as Konat, Bannu and D.G khan has lowered the water table and resulted in the contamination from underlying saline water.
If we talk about Balochistan, their in Makran basins contain highly brackish groundwater.
Wastage of water in single drops, an empty tube was found to be filled up a mark of 10Ml in 13 seconds when it is placed under a top, leaking water just in a single drop. Then in one-minute taps leaks water=46.2ml. So in a country of more than 140 million population, if we consider that only 10 million taps leak water just in a single drop.
According to the above calculations we wast at least 633.3 million.
Thus, it’s requested to everyone that don’t waste the water.
