Children are considered the backbone of every nation because of whom the nation can progress, develop and improve. These children play a crucial role in transforming the nation through their hard work and skills.
It seems unfortunate that in Balochistan, most of the children have been forced to get married at the age of 15 to 18 and even below that.
Without unawareness of proper education, the parents are forcing their small children to take the burden of marriage.
Young girls under the age of 18 have greater chances of developing complications while giving birth to children. This major issue can lead to death for them.
As a consequence, Balochistan is at the top of the maternal mortality rate due to weak health and performing heavy obligations of underage marriages.
The recent report published by the Population Council with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and in collaboration with the Balochistan Social Welfare Department estimated that the Makran division of Balochistan had the highest prevalence of under-18 girls marriages with 23 percent.
The officials found that the prevalence of under-18 girls marriages stood at 22.4 percent in Nasirabad and followed by 22 percent in the Sibi division.
Quetta division had reported percentages of both under-15 and under-18 girls marriages at 2.6 percent and 11 percent respectively.
Moreover, around 21.6 percent of women aged between 20 and 24 years are married off in Balochistan before reaching their 18th birthday.
About 6 percent are married off before reaching 15 years old.
The experts highlighted that the prevalence of child marriage is high for girls who belong to poorer families at 22.4 percent.
Both under-15 and under-18 child marriages should be prevented from increasing and we have to provide them the highest level of education.
These unfortunate circumstances have destroyed the future of many children across Balochistan.
I urge the authorities concerned to prevent child marriages in the province and equip them with proper education with sufficient facilities so that the children can gain quality education to stand against cruel acts and fulfill their expectations.
