In Pakistan, honour or shame killing is referred to as Karo-kari. Pakistan has the largest reported and estimated a number of honour killings each year in the world. Pakistan accounts for one-fifth of all honour killings worldwide (1000 out of a total of 5000 every year).
Honour killing is the homicide of a member of a family or social group by other members because the victim is thought to have brought dishonour upon the family or the community. The victim’s death is considered as a means of restoring the family’s reputation and honour. Honour killing has most certainly been continuously committed in Pakistan for thousands of years, and despite recent legal reforms, it remains a frequent practice. The Pakistani women’s human rights organizations should assist and protect the blamed victims. Government authorities and lawmakers are urged to implement the laws to prevent all these killings in the name of shame and honour.
