Female education is in chaos in Balochistan
Dear editor,
In rural areas in Balochistan, female education is in chaos. Currently, less than 2 percent of women are literate in Balochistan. Many females are not enrolled in school and many are enrolled but are unable to complete their education due to severe issues.
Females have turned just domestic labors due to narrow-mindness of people. People think that girls are only born to work in their homes and their certain responsibilities are cooking food, washing clothes and pots, cleaning the house, childbearing and rearing. They do not allow them to go to educational institutions.
Early marriage of girls is a big hurdle in female education in Balochistan. According to research in Balochistan, 21 percent of girls marry before the age of 18, and 3 % marry before the of age 15. Married females, due to social pressure and conservative thinking, are not allowed to attend school, colleges, and other educational institutions. Therefore, her life suddenly changes from playing and studying to married life responsibilities.
If a family has to choose between educating a son or daughter because of financial problems then typically son will be chosen. Many parents’ point of view educating a daughter is wasting of money and time. As a daughter will eventually live with their husband’s family and parents will not get any benefits. They see that educating a son like planting a plant that would yield something in the future.
Limited freedom of speech for women in the state is a big barrier in female education. Everyone needs to be reminded of the famous saying that every behind every successful man there is a woman.
Lack of education facilities in a far-flung areas in Balochistan is the another big barrier in female education. It is a government failure to provide easy and accessible education in far-flung areas of Balochistan. Although boys, too, confront various challenges in their pursuit of education, females are the ones that are affected the most.
Male students can manage to get access to institutions in major cities, but girls, due to numerous challenges are unable to go for higher education. Most parents are scared to send their daughters to far-off cities for education for obvious reasons.
At the last, it is requested to the government of Balochistan provide good education facilities for females in far-flung areas of Balochistan. It is rightly said that “if you educate a woman then you will educate a nation’’.
