The dignity of labour is highly valued in Islam. In the holy Quran, Allah says that a man obtains what he works for.
Similarly, the last Prophet of Allah Almighty, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), was a tradesman. Not only that, but he also fixed his own shoes and clothes and handled other household chores. He was an active participant in the construction of the Madina masjid.
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has stated that an honest labourer is Allah’s friend. He once gave an axe to a beggar and encouraged him to go to the jungle and hack wood for a living. After a few days, the poor man approached the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and showed his genuine earnings. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was overjoyed, saying, “This is far better than the humiliation of begging that would have been on your face on the day of the judgement.”
The nations that have accomplished glory had recognised the value and dignity of labour. They despise sloth. Their youth take satisfaction in doing what might sound ordinary like selling newspapers, sweeping streets, and working as servers in restaurants. They have realised that by doing so, they can become self-sufficient and independent. Because of their great belief in the dignity of labour, those nations have flourished, and their achievements, particularly in science and technology, are beyond belief.
Unfortunately, individuals in countries like ours have yet to see the value of labour. Young people with a good education are unlikely to want to pursue physical labour. They believe that doing minor tasks is beneath their status.
