Dengue fever is a deadly disease caused by a virus namely Dengue virus, it is also known as breakbone fever. Dengue fever became a global issue and it is common in more than 100 countries including Pakistan.
In the time of covid pandemic when people are losing their lives and being mentally and physically hunted in our country by a coronavirus, the horrible dengue has also become fatal. In a recent Pakistani Health Officials report on 12 May, more than 950 cases of Dengue have been reported in the two provinces of Pakistan, 550 cases reported in Sindh, and in Balochistan, more than 400. Many cases go unregistered.
The dengue virus transmitted by mosquitoes to human beings can cause acute illness followed by symptoms like High fever as high as 104-degree Fahrenheit, headache, muscle and joints pain with including severe symptoms like Dengue Shock Fever (DSS) and Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF).
The vaccine used for the Dengue virus is available in some countries but not commercially available elsewhere. The best way to protect ourselves is taking preventive measures. It is well said that prevention is better than cure, the people of Sindh and Balochistan should take measures to prevent mosquito bites, get rid of standing water, use mosquito repellents, and sleep under mosquito nets to avoid being bitten.
Furthermore, Government should take hard measures to control the spread of the virus, compete and eradicate dengue in these two provinces as well in the whole country by spraying, making dengue centers at hospitals, and starting an anti-dengue awareness campaign in the country.
