Warner Bros. has officially announced the release of their recent $500 million global grosser “Wonka” for digital purchase in the UK on Monday, January 22.
The decision has come despite its ongoing success as the number one film in the UK Box Office for weeks now.
The movie, starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka, has received positive reviews from both critics and audiences since its theatrical debut in December with a global box office haul over $511 million and still going strong.
The digital release comes just 45 days after the film’s initial theatrical release, which is a relatively shorter window compared to other recent Warner Bros. big-budget movies.
For example, ‘Barbie’ had a 53-day exclusivity with theaters, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ hit digital streaming platforms 67 days after its theatrical release, ‘Evil Dead Rise’ after 63 days, and Blue Beetle landed on streaming services 91 days after its theatrical release.
Only ‘The Flash’ took a less-days route going digital in just 33 days.
Interestingly, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ another Warner Bros. December release, is also set to be available for rent and purchase on January 23, just 31 days after its theatrical debut on December 21 last year.
It is not clear when ‘Wonka’ will be available for streaming on Max, Warner Bros.’ streaming platform, for the paid subscribers.
