Malachy Doyle is the acclaimed author of Digger and Lew, Big Pig, Teddy Bear Blue, Antonio on the Other Side of the World, Getting Smaller, and Too Noisy. His first teenage novel, Georgie, won the Tir na n-Og prize and his picture book, Cow, won an English Association Award for non-fiction. He also won the 2002 White Raven Award for Hungry! Hungry! He lives with his family (and his cat, dog, ducks, and hens) in County Donegal.
In the book, ‘Trapped’, a boy named Thomas had a dog called Jacko. One day when he was coming from school he noticed that Jacko was not chasing him. He loved Jacko more than anything. There were many open mine shafts. On a snowy day, Tom was going to Mam’s house, and he heard Jacko’s bark. He tried to search for him and then fell into an open shaft. His arm was broken. He hardly managed to get out of the open shaft with one arm. After that, they went to rescue Jacko in a deep shaft. The mountain rescue team and Thomas went in to get Jacko out. But Jacko went through a narrow hole. Everyone followed him. They saw a man who fainted. He was Will Evans the owner of mine shafts. They get Jacko and Will Evans out of the shaft. And then they live happily ever again.
I enjoyed this story because it tells us how loyal a pet is. And especially, dogs. And the love between the pet and the owner is great and interesting.
