Rape in Pakistan
Rape is one of the biggest issues which affects women severely. One of the earliest cases of rape in Pakistan was the gang rape of Mukhtaran Bibi which was conducted by the order of a local court known as “Panchayat”. Punishment of rape in Pakistan is hanging till death and imprisonment of between 10 to 25 years depending on the intensity of the case. Asma Jahangir who was a human rights activist, lawyer and co-founder of the women’s rights group (WAF) who herself was shot dead a few years back said that at least 72 percent of women in the custody of security forces in Pakistan are physically or sexually abused. However, in 36 districts of Punjab in 2019 alone 12600 cases of women kidnapping and abuse both physically and sexually were reported and those cases that go unreported due to the reputation and security of the family are way higher. Among these 2852 cases were registered in Lahore, 899 in Faisalabad, 587 in Multan.
It is my suggestion to the leaders to take action on these kinds of issues which affect women especially small girls who have to leave education and work due to the same issue.
