Poverty in Pakistan
COVID-19 impact has pushed millions of people below the poverty line. Pakistan’s top 10% population earns 27.6% of the total revenue while the bottom 10% earns only 4.1% of the total earnings. However, in Pakistan poverty fell from 64.3% in 2002 to 29.5% in 2014, and 6.1% in 2013 to just 3.9% in 2015. Pakistan has made substantial progress in reducing poverty giving it the second-lowest headcount poverty rate in South Asia. Unfortunately, recently the global pandemic has pushed several countries towards economic crisis. According to a new report by the IMF, poverty has increased in the country up to 40%. Pakistan is living below the poverty line after the pandemic struck. Furthermore, 31% of poverty increased in June 2018. Several people have even committed suicide during the economic downfall of the state. Thus, the government of Pakistan must provide relief to the masses instead of putting more burden in the shape of wheat crisis and inflation in the country.
