Gwadar Port Balochistan
Gwadar Port is a warm-water, deep seaport situated on the Arabian Sea at Gwadar in the Balochistan province of Pakistan. Gwadar’s potential to be a deep-water seaport was first noted in 1954, while the city was still under Oman suzerainty.
After four years of negotiations, including six months of intense negotiations, Pakistan purchased the Gwadar enclave from the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman for 3 million dollars. Gwadar formally became the port of Pakistan on 8 December 1958, after 174 years of Omani rule.
The Gwadar port dredging project will deepen approach channels to a depth of 14 meters from the current 11.5 meters, depth at a cost of 27 million dollars. Dredging will enable docking of larger ships with a deadweight tonnage of up to 70,000 at Gwadar port, while current capacity permits a maximum of 20,000 DWT.
The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was established on 22 May 2013, is a collection of infrastructure projects that are currently under construction throughout Pakistan. Originally valued at 46 billion dollars. The value of the CPEC project is worth 62 billion dollars as of 2017.
On 20 April 2015, Pakistan and China signed an agreement to commence work on the 46 billion dollar agreement which is roughly 20% of Pakistan’s annual GDPA with approximately 28 billion dollars worth of fast-tracked “Early Harvest” project to be developed.
