Looking at the US box office rankings for Thursday, Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney’s movie, “Anyone But You”, has overtaken the biggie DC Extended Universe’s superhero flick “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom”, securing the third position in the box office.
‘Anyone But You’ Outpaces ‘Aquaman 2’
The R-rated romcom, released alongside Aquaman sequel on December 22nd, grossed a strong $2 million on its second Thursday, surpassing Aquaman’s $1.9 million gross at the US Box Office.
Despite a -28.6% drop from the previous Thursday, it has accumulated an impressive $34.2 million in the US. The film’s budget is reportedly $25 million and is projected to achieve a run of $55 million to $70 million in the US.
Universal’s Animation ‘Migration’ Holds onto its 2nd Spot
‘Migration’, Universal’s new animation release, is holding onto the second spot in its second week at the US box office. The movie beat ‘Anyone But You’ and ‘Aquaman 2’ to become the 2nd on the box office rankings for the day.
Although facing a -67.7% drop from the last Thursday due to the end of the holiday corridor for the New Year celebrations, it still outperformed big-budgeted live actioner ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’, grossing $2.1 million on its second Thursday.
With roughly $67.6 million gross in the US already, the film is eyeing a substantial run of over $135 million if it maintains its strong performance post-holidays.
‘Aquaman’ Struggle Adds to Superhero Films’ Woes at Box Office
Speaking of ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Hear in return roles, the movie concluded its second week at the US box office with a disappointing $1.9 million on the second Thursday.
However, it’s trailing not only in total grosses at the box office but also in legs compared to the first Aquaman of 2018.
With an $89.4 million gross total in the US so far, the film is witnessing major drops in overall footfalls at the ticket window despite the overall audience reception being being better than some of the latest superhero releases of 2023.
The sequel experienced a significant -67% drop from the previous Thursday. It will be interesting to see how the movie performs in the coming weeks against the already competition and new releases from Friday on.
‘Wonka’ Continues its Dream Run
Timothée Chalamet’s lead role in the musical hit ‘Wonka’ has seen him a cross another box office milestone, with the film now crossing the $150 million mark at the US box office in its third week in cinemas.
The Paul King directorial film grossed a solid $2.7 million on its third Thursday, claiming the #1 position, but experienced a steeper but expected drop of -66.2% from the previous Thursday.
Despite the major decline, ‘Wonka’ grosses $150.2 million in the US alone, aiming for the $225 million mark.
The other movie to hit the $1 million mark at the US market was The Boys in The Boat with a $1 million gross completing the top 5.
