A Thousand Splendid Suns (Book Review)
A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS, A majestic book with a heart-touching story of two girls, it was written by Khalid Hussain and published in 2007, it divided into 4 parts and includes 51 chapters and contains 388 pages.
The book began with a girl named Maryam who lived in Herat, when her mother committed suicide, she was forced to marry Rasheed who worked as a shoemaker in Kabul, he was nearly two-decade elder than Maryam, Maryam was just 15 years old, then rashed was asked by Mullah whether he accepts Maryam As his wife or not, rashed replied with” Yes I accepted her For becoming my lifelong partner”, For the first time when Maryam heard His voice, it reminded Maryam ” the sound of dry autumn leaves crushed underfoot” when they both left for Kabul, Maryam was very scared and pained, she was confused and bushed.
With the passage of time, the condition of Kabul became worse, the Taliban was fighting for freedom against the Soviet Union. Rashed was nearly 60 he used to beat Maryam brutally.
Once Rashed brought a beautiful girl, Laila, she was injured, her parents died in a rocket explosion. Laila had a boyfriend who left Kabul for somewhere else. Laila was just 15 when Rashed asked her to marry. Laila was compelled and aidless and agreed. After some months Laila was blessed with a boy, but he was not Rashed’s son.
Laila was rebuffed by Rasheed to adopt her son. Rashed used to beat both her wives brutally. they both had decided to leave Rashed and his house. In the first attempt they failed, later they had no choice then they planned to kill him, and this time they succeeded. Laila was thrilled to leave Kabul with her boyfriend and Childs. MARYAM stayed in Kabul after some years when she was killed by the Taliban.
I suggest everyone read it, it is passing a great message that women in our societies are not getting their rights, their life decisions are being taken by others, Even Islam has taught that we all are equal we all have equal rights, So far we have witnessed such several cases around us that girls are getting married at a very young age they are not being asked whether they are happy with the decision which is being taken by their ancestors, they will feel troubled and suffer a lot later.
